“I Don’t Even Know What I Was Thinking” [5.9.12]

Alright, you guys.  I took a bit of a break from recapping for a few days, and I think I’m just going to do the one today.  It’s not the kiss episode, but we’re getting close!  Here we go:

Doug’s helping Cindy set up for Tony’s birthday, for which he and Ste have made some food.  Cindy asks him why he lied about being sick that morning and tells him that Ste’s acting strange too.  She figures something’s up.  ”Have you two had a row?”  Ste enters at that moment and the tension is obvious.  Cindy says as much.  ”I told her everything’s fine,” Doug says.  Cindy doesn’t really care what’s going on with them as long as it doesn’t interfere with Tony’s birthday surprise.  She leaves, but not before telling them to kiss and make up.  Silly Cindy… that’s next episode.  Doug reassures Ste that Cindy doesn’t know anything.  ”I’ve been going over this in my head…” Doug wants to talk about what he said the other night, but Ste tells him he has somewhere he has to be.  At that moment Amy runs in, telling Ste that Adam’s in the deli.

Doug pops down to the deli to grab some more stuff for Tony’s birthday surprise and asks Amy where Ste is.  He’s gone for a drink with Adam.  ”I thought he was just popping in to say hi.”  Amy tells Doug that Ste has faith in him to run the store while he’s gone.  Aw.  She tells him that she’s happy that everything’s going well for Ste for a change – first the deli, now Adam.  Amy asks Doug what he thinks of Adam.  ”He’s alright.”  ”He’s really into Ste.”  ”Yeah, but they don’t really know each other.”  Oh, jealous Doug.  ”I know, I’m just glad he found someone he really likes who could actually make him happy.  Feels like it’s been a long time coming.”

Wow, Adam really does look like Matt Smith with eyebrows.  He and Ste are having a drink at the Dog and Ste is telling him that he has to get back to the deli.  He also makes excuses not to see Adam that night.  Adam asks why Ste is asking weird and we learn that Ste had apparently told Amy that he and Adam had gone out the night before, while Ste had actually cancelled their date.  Hmmmm.  Adam suspects that Ste is seeing someone else, which Ste denies.  ”I don’t even know what you’re going on about.”  ”I think we’re done here, aren’t we?”  Adam leaves.  Oh, Adam Plot-Device, we hardly knew you.  Don’t worry guys, he’ll be back to do more plot-devicey things later.

Oh like right now.  Oh boy.  Ste’s still hanging out by the Dog.  He asks if Ste’s waiting for someone else.  ”Doug?”  ”Why? Have you spoken to him?”  ”I don’t have to, I already know what’s going on.”  Adam tells Ste that it’s obvious that there’s something going on between him and Doug.  Ste assures him that he and Doug are just business partners, but then freaks out when Adam tells him he’s just trying to convince himself.  ”Why are you so sure about me and Doug?”  ”Because instead of asking me for another chance, you’re asking me about the man you can’t get out of your head.”  Is it wrong that everytime I see Adam I sing “matchmaker, matchmaker, make me match”?  He’s just that plot device-y.

And suddenly, Ste is sure of what he wants – Doug.  It’s kinda sweet, actually.  It’s how everyone wishes their crushes would go – that the object of their affection would suddenly have an epiphany and come running to them.  Which is what makes this so difficult to watch – because Doug just ruins it for himself.  Ste comes in to the deli, all excited to tell Doug how he really feels.  But Doug puts his serious face on and decides to explain away his emotional outburst from the night before.  ”We work together.  And we’re doing a good job.  And we’d be crazy to let what I said ruin all that.”  Ste’s smile fades from his face.  ”Yeah, absolutely.”  Nooooooooo.  Douglas, stop talking!  ”I don’t even know what I was thinking.  We’ve just been spending a lot of time together.  I don’t even know where it came from.”  Ste looks so disappointed.  ”I suppose it’s easy to get emotions confused, innit?”  ”I couldn’t even sleep, I’ve been freaking out.  I just want us to be able to work together and be friends.  So, do you think we can give that a try?”  ”Is that what you really want?”  Oh, this is breaking my heart.  You poor precious boys.  ”Yeah.”  Ste gives a fake little smile.  ”Cool!  Like it never happened then!”  They both smile, but when Ste heads off to the back, they both look miserable.

So there you have it.  Sort of typical cliche soap drama.  I think we’ve seen this scenario play out many times before.  It’s still sad, though.  Of course, as we all know, things start to look better next time (sort of).  So, stay tuned!
